What to know
- Tamu is in Myanmar ( Burma ) and Moreh is on the Indian side
- Accomodation in Moreh is more cheaper than Tamu ( Myanmar ) . You are advised to stay overnight in Moreh .
- Valid Myanmar Visa should be in your passport to enter Myanmar
- Overland Permit For Myanmar side must be arranged in advance
What you need
A Myanmar visa in your passport. You can obtain Myanmar Evisa through Official Government Website https://evisa.moip.gov.mm/ . Don’t even think of getting your visa ‘on arrival’ at the border.
A permit for that area of Myanmar. We will take about 3 weeks to arrange, so you are to plan this accordingly. You are advised to contact us to arrange the permit for that area of Myanmar ( info@panoramicmyanamrtour.com , You need to tell us the exact date you’re crossing. The permit itself will be emailed to you .it – it’s more of a formality than an official document. You are advised to print it out before crossing border gate
Photocopies. The Myanmar border guys will ask for a copy of your passport and Myanmar visa.
HOW TO GET FROM IMPHAL TO MOREH
Imphal is the capital of the Indian state of Manipur (you don’t need a permit to visit). You can take the private taxi or shared taxi to get to Moreh .It will cost around INR3000/USD45. But it’s a windy 3-hour drive, so fair enough.The drive will get very scenic, and the road is surprisingly good for most of the journey. Every town have army checkpoints .
WHAT’S MOREH LIKE AS A TOWN?
It probably won’t be the highlight of your trip around India. If you’ve been travelling through India for a while, you probably have an idea what it’s like.
CROSSING OVER THE BORDER
You are to walk the 1km or so through town to the Friendship Gate.
Step 1: Get an exit stamp
Upon your arrival at the check point , you are to find the immigration office . it is opposite the police compound . Immigration Officer will check your permission ( the permission to cross the border ) and stamped your passsports .
Step 2: Get customs clearance
Across the road, there is another little compound with shabby buildings. Where the custom officer will record how many bags you have and what is it ..
Step 3: Back to the border
After custom clearance , the army guys your exit stamps and crossing over the short bride over the river .
Step 4: To Myanmar and beyond!
After you crossed the short bridge over the river, you are to present all official documents you prepared and have like permission letter , Myanmar Visa and Photocopies of your passports .
After all your documents have been well checked by Immigration Officers –You are ready to land in Myanmar . Welcome to Myanmar!
WHAT NEXT?WEHN YOU ARE IN TAMU
It’s another 2km or so walk into Tamu itself, but it doesn’t really have a center like Moreh, instead it’s spread along the amazingly well-paved ‘Friendship Highway’.
If no one is waiting for you in Tamu , you are advised to walk down to bus station or take a rickshaw to bus station from where you can travel to Mandalay .
Three will be a different bus companies operating public transports from Tamu to Mandalay . There is a 12-seater van heading to Mandalay at 1:30pm.( this is the last van heading to Mandalay ) . If ATM Machines are closed on weekends, only place where you can exchange your foreign currency into local currency “ Kyat ”is a hotel .
The bus ticket for the Mandalay van cost MMK25,000 / GBP13 / USD19 per person, But it is believed to be the long journey from Tamu to Mandalay ( 16 hours drive ), So you will get to Mandalay the next morning around 07:00 am .Hopefully the above information will be helpful for you to enter Myanmar through India Myanmar Border Gate .
